Engine Noise in Gas Vs. Diesel RVs

Motor homes run on one of two types of engines: gas or diesel. Both engines produce noise; the location of the engine and the engine size determines how loud an engine sounds to the occupants of an RV.
  1. Gas Engines

    • Gas engines are complex combustion engines. They come in varying sizes, from small four-cylinder models to large 10-cylinder powerhouses. As the engine size increases, so does the noise it produces.

    Diesel Engines

    • Diesel engines have more pulling or pushing power than a gas engine. They are also larger than gas engines. According to "The RV Handbook," diesel engines produce more noise than gas engines. Many environmentally conscious people consider diesel engines noisy and dirty.

    Engine Location

    • Both engine types produce noise audible to passengers and drivers. Larger diesel RVs have the engine located in the rear of the rig, which keeps engine noise away from the occupants. Gas engines sit in the front of the rig. This placement allows more noise to enter the front compartment, where the driver and passengers can hear it.
