Airline Jet Types

When you board a commercial flight you are given a safety briefing by one of the flight crew. This briefing not only gives general safety tips, but provides information on the specific type of jet you are flying in. Airlines employ different jets for different routes and demands. From the super-sized Airbus A380---the largest commercial jet used today---to smaller Boeing 707s, the skies are filled with many different airline jets.
  1. Airbus

    • Airbus, based out of Toulouse, France, makes a range of commercial airline jets. Among these is the recently unveiled A380, the largest commercial jet being flown today. The A380 is a "double decker" jumbo jet with seating for up to 800 passengers. The A380 has an estimated flight range of up to 8000 nautical miles.

Airbus's smaller jet fleet includes the A330 and A340 jets. These jets have seating capacities between 300 and 400 passengers and a flight range up to 6500 nautical miles. The smaller A300 and A310 jets have seating capacities between 200 to 250 passengers and a nautical mile range to 5000 miles. The smallest of the Airbus jet fleet is the A320; The A320 has a seating capacity to 150 passengers and a range to 4000 nautical miles.

    Boeing

    • Boeing, based out of Washington State, is known for the 747 jumbo jet, which once held the title for largest commercial jet in use. The 747 family of jets have passenger capacities up to 800 passengers and a range up to 7400 nautical miles.

Boeings 767 family of jets are smaller than the 747 and have seating capacities up to 255 passengers. The 767 jets have a range of 6,385 nautical miles.

The 777 series of Boeing's jets are smaller than the 747 but slightly larger than the 767. The 777 family of jets have seating capacities to 440 passengers and a range up to 5,240 nautical miles.

    Smaller Jets

    • Regional airlines often use smaller prop or jet driven aircraft. These small jets come from different makers and have varying capabilities. Pilatus, based in Switzerland, produces small jet aircraft with passenger capacities up to 18 people. These small air craft have nautical ranges between 2000 and 3000.

Other small jet makers include Bombardier, the Dornier 328 jet, the Fokker 100 and the Embraer family of small jets.
