How to Upgrade American Airline Tickets to First Class

As one of America's most popular airlines, American Airlines serves more than 250 cities in 40 countries as of October 2010. For AAdvantage club members, the airline also offers convenient options for upgrading flight tickets to first class. This can be done either online, by phone with the help of an agent, or during self-service check-in at the airport.

Upgrade Online

  Go to the the American Airlines website, aa.com.

  Click on the "AAdvantage" link.

  Click on "Buy Upgrades." Follow the directions on your screen to purchase an upgrade to first class.
Upgrade by Phone

  Call AAdvantage Reservations at 1-800-882-8880.

  Follow the telephone prompts that allow you to speak with an agent about upgrading your ticket.

  Inform the agent that you want to upgrade to first class and allow him to assist you with your request.
Upgrade During Self-Service Check-In

  At the self-service machine, choose your desired language.

  Enter the required flight or credit card information, and swipe your passport or AAdvantage card.
