If you are traveling via air within the United States, there is a chance you may be on an American Airlines flight. Typically, American Airlines flights have several different seating classes, ranging from coach (or economy) to business class and even first class. Although you typically have to purchase a business- or first-class ticket to get a seat in those parts of the plane, it is possible to upgrade your flight after the fact and possibly even save some money in the process.
Book a flight that is going to depart early in the morning. These flights are less likely to be filled, which increases your chances of upgrading your seat.
Show up early to check in for your flight. Waiting until the last minute to check in is not going to help your chances of upgrading your seat.
