For some air travelers first class is the uncharted territory beyond the curtain. For others it is a common place--their second home in the sky. With a little ingenuity, it's possible to break through and receive regular airline ticket upgrades.
Use your frequent flyer miles to purchase a ticket. Keep in mind that you'll use three times the miles of a coach ticket to get one in first class, but you'll still have no out-of-pocket expenses for airfare.
Purchase a coach class ticket, and then use your frequent flyer miles to upgrade to first class. Be sure the ticket is upgradeable before you buy, though.
Arrive to the airport early and ask if any airline ticket upgrades are available.
Look for upgrade coupons on eBay. Just be certain the coupon can be used for an upgrade on your specific flight.
Buy a discounted first class ticket often known as a Y-Up or Q-Up.
Offer to give up your seat if the flight is overbooked. In most cases, airlines will compensate you with spending cash and a free flight to use within the year. If it turns out that they don't need your seat, the airline will often give you a first class seat just for being willing to delay your trip.
