Sign up for airlines' frequent flyer programs and use frequent flyer rewards programs cards to purchase tickets. Both increase the likelihood of being chosen for a free upgrade. Use the cards when booking.
Pick a flight that flies on a Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday when tickets are cheaper overall, including first class tickets. Shop around for the cheapest first class ticket on different airlines.
Ask the booking agent about a Y-Up fare when buying the ticket. A Y-Up fare increases the likelihood of flying first class, giving the flyer an increased chance of being bumped should first class have empty seats. The Y-Up fare is usually only slightly more expensive.
Wear business attire such as a suit and tie when flying, and travel alone. Travelers with children are rarely chosen for free upgrades.
Arrive early and board the plane as soon as called for boarding. Ask the ground staff about upgrading. Be courteous to ground employees; they determine if a passenger will be upgraded.
