Redeem your frequent flier miles. On most major airlines, you can upgrade a coach or economy ticket to first class. Larger airlines also sell upgrade coupons or certificates for domestic flights. Use these coupons at the gate to upgrade to a first-class seat. High-ranking frequent fliers have a greater chance of using the coupons at the final boarding call.
Find fares that have "Y-up" or "Q-up," or "Z" fare types. Thousands of these discount first-class fares are available every day, and require a few extra mouse clicks when searching for flights online. Search websites such as Expedia, Fare Compare and Travelocity by specific fare type.
First-class tickets are often available for a lower cost than the most expensive coach fare.
Purchase a ticket upgrade at the gate. Be sure to arrive early, as upgrades are available on a first-come first-serve basis, and often only to those ticketholders who paid a full-fare price.
Board the plane last, since upgrades are granted at the last minute when the plane is full. This also allows you to eye first class to see if there are any seats still available. If you nicely ask the flight attendant as you enter, she may allow you to switch to avoid seat disruptions in a nearly full coach cabin.
Check with the airline for current upgrade promotions to see if you are eligible.
Offer your seat on an overbooked flight and receive compensation as well as a later flight. A gracious airline may grant you an upgrade to first class for switching to the later flight.
Ask the agent to add a note to your passenger record stating your occupation. Humanitarian workers, corporate CEOs and other occupations often are given upgrades, so it is worth mentioning. Be considerate to the airline workers, ask politely and never make demands.
