Luggage Regulations for International Flights

Airlines get to decide just how much and what type of luggage they'll allow passengers to take, as long as they follow certain international weight and content restrictions. Check with your airline for variable specifics.
  1. Liquid Restrictions

    • Remove all liquids over the one-quart bag allowance from your carry-on luggage to avoid having them disposed of at the security checkpoint. Liquids must be in bottles of 3 oz. or less.

    Checked Bags

    • To and from the United States, the limit for free checked luggage is usually two bags, each weighing a maximum of 50 to 70 lbs., depending on your carrier. For flights within most of the rest of the world, a weight system is imposed. In coach class, the total weight limit is normally 44 lbs.; in business class, it's 66 lbs.; and in first class, passengers can generally bring 88 lbs. of luggage.

    Lighters

    • While a small cigarette lighter is allowed on board with your carry-on luggage in some countries, check the policy in both the arrival country and departure country.

    Weapons

    • Firearms, sharp objects and other weapons must also be declared and placed in checked luggage. Explosives are never allowed to travel on a commercial aircraft.
