Baggage Requirements for KLM International Flights

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines operates international flights across the globe from its Amsterdam hub. Before traveling with KLM you should pay attention to baggage requirements and restrictions. Failure to do this may lead to extra charges at the airport. As with all airlines, KLM operates security measures that restrict items and you should always check prior to departure as these restrictions can change at short notice.
  1. Check-in Baggage Allowance

    • KLM baggage allowances vary according to type of ticket you have booked. Your exact allowance will be stated on your ticket or you can check with the Manage My Booking facility on the airline's website. For economy class, the allowance is usually either one or two pieces with a maximum weight of 50 pounds. You can check in extra baggage for a further fee. Discounts are usually available if this is done online.

    Children's Baggage

    • If you are traveling with children younger than two, you may check in baggage with items for baby care that weigh no more than 22 pounds. Collapsible strollers or prams can be checked in free of charge and you are allowed a piece of hand baggage no more than 22 pounds for the child.

    Carry-On Baggage

    • Carry-on baggage on economy class flights is limited to one item not exceeding 26 pounds and a maximum size of 21.5 inches by 10 inches by 13.5 inches. You can take a handbag, camera or small laptop on board as an additional accessory. World and Business Class travelers can take two bags not exceeding 40 pounds in total plus an accessory item.

    Restricted Items

    • Restrictions on liquids, creams and aerosols apply. You may take small volumes up to 3.4 ounces in your carry-on luggage. These should be placed in a see-through plastic bag. Baby foods, medicines and special diet foods are exempt from these rules. For flights to the United States, printer or toner cartridges weighing more than 16 ounces are prohibited from check-in and carry-on luggage

    Special Baggage

    • KLM will transport special baggage items including sporting equipment and musical instruments. Some items may be taken as part of normal baggage and others need to be reserved as special baggage 48 hours prior to departure. You should check the KLM website for guidance on various unusual items.
