Australian Domestic Airline Travel: Regulations for Newborn Infants

Australian airline guidelines state that newborns and infants may travel on domestic flights for a reduced cost or for free, in most cases. Your baby can travel on your lap for free or you can purchase a ticket for the baby to fly in a car seat or bassinet. Many regulations regarding infants are airline-specific, so you may need to contact your airline when planning your trip.
  1. Babies fly free

    • One child under the age of 2 (or, in some cases, 3) may travel for free on your lap on domestic Australian flights. For each adult in your party, exactly one child may travel for free.

    Child fares for babies

    • If you prefer that your baby fly in a travel seat or bassinet instead of traveling on your lap then you must purchase a ticket at a reduced child rate. Child fares typically cost 67 percent to 75 percent of full adult fares.

    Traveling with additional babies

    • If you are traveling with more babies than adults then you will need to purchase full adult fares for each additional baby.

    Baby car seats

    • Many airlines allow you to use your own baby car seat instead of an airline-provided bassinet, if you have purchased a seat for a baby. Contact the airline prior to leaving for the airport for more information.

    Using an airline-provided bassinet

    • If you require a bassinet or travel seat for your baby then you will need to inform the airline of such at the time of booking. Bassinets typically have a weight limit of 11 kilograms (24 pounds).

    Baby strollers

    • Most airlines allow you to check your baby's pram or stroller at the boarding gate and retrieve it at the end of the flight; others require you to check the stroller at check-in. Check with your airline once you arrive at the airport.

    Baby meals

    • Baby meals are available on some airlines. Contact your airline during booking to request baby meals when you purchase your ticket.
