Laptops and desktops can be connected directly or over a network, both of which will allow for file transfers between the two. The process is used to move files to and from one computer to the other.
Desktops and laptops both are typically equipped with either on-board ethernet network connections or, in the case of some desktops, a separate network interface card, or NIC. The connection port for all of these will accept a traditional category 5 ethernet cable or a crossover cable. To directly connect two computers to one another, a crossover cable is advised. Crossover cables resemble regular ethernet cables, but the wiring method in the cable itself is done differently to enable transfer directly between two computers.
Two computers can be connected through a null modem or serial connection. This type of connection is slower, and some laptops and desktops will not have a null modem connection. A null modem connection has nine pins in two rows.
Special USB cables can be used to directly connect two computers. A regular USB cable should not be used, however, as doing so can damage the computers.
Instead of connecting computers directly to one another, they can share files and transfer data over a network or through a hub.
Wired networks will require more cables and possibly more work to set up. Wireless networks may be more of a hassle for some users, however, as some computers and routers do not support all of the different encryption methods for securing data.
Wired networks are typically faster and more secure. The main selling point for wireless networks are their mobility. Users will sacrifice other perks such as cost and security for that added mobility.
