How Can I Take Avocados on a Plane?

The Transportation Security Administration checks both carry-on and checked baggage for airline passengers. In order to keep flying safe, the TSA restricts what people can bring on an airplane as carry-on baggage. Passengers can bring 3 oz. of a liquid or gel onto an airplane but the TSA has no prohibitions on solid food like avocados. Avocados are hard before they ripen, but when ripe, they are soft and bruise easily, so cushioning them in your baggage or carry-on keeps the fruit intact.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the bag or box that you want to bring on the plane. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, any carry-on whose total length, width and height exceeds 45 inches must be checked. Commercial airlines have specific size requirements for carry-on packages to make sure that the item can go under the seat or in the overhead compartment. Check with your carrier to make sure the packaging you use fits their requirements.

    • 2

Line all the exterior sides of the container with materials that absorb shocks, like foam rubber or sheets of polyfill. You can tape the foam or polyfill to the sides of the container to hold it in place. These products cushion the contents of the package from external blows.

    • 3

Cut the foam or polyfill to fit each avocado so you can wrap each piece to reduce bruising. If you are bringing along ripe avocados, place a layer of packing peanuts on the bottom of the container and put down a layer of the fruit. Add a layer of packing peanuts, then another layer of avocados. Continue until the package is full, ending with a layer of peanuts on top. As long as you surround each avocado with packing peanuts, you do not need to wrap them.

Wrap your clothes or other soft objects around the avocados if you are not bringing many on the plane. Placing the avocados in the center of your carry-on protects them from bruising.
