How to Fly With a Backpack

Backpacks are useful luggage choices for college youth heading to Europe or for those heading out for eco-tourism adventures. Airlines will accept backpacks as checked or carry-on luggage, provided they meet certain criteria. With a little foreknowledge, you can avoid unwanted surprises when arriving to check in for your flight.

Instructions

    • 1

Do not overfill the backpack. Keep heavy items toward the bottom center of the pack and surround fragile items with clothing or soft goods.

    • 2

Tuck in all straps and attachments. If possible, push them into the compartments and zip them up. If nothing else, clip all attachments together and tighten the straps.Leave nothing attached to the outside of the pack.

    • 3

Attach name tags to the top handle or carrying strap of the backpack. Consult with your airline for weight limitations on checked bags. If your backpack goes over the weight limit, be prepared to pay fees.

    • 4

Place your backpack into the carry-on measurement container at the airport to ensure it meets the specifications. If it is too large, it needs to be checked. In most cases, you can call the airline directly or go onto the website to check the carry-on size limits.

    • 5

Check the backpack at the counter or head onto the plane with it as a carry-on, depending on size and weight.
