How to Track a Plane Flight

When you need to track a flight, calling the airline may or may not give you accurate information. Or perhaps you don't want to search for the airline's phone number, choose extension options and listen to pre-recorded and possibly dated information. There are several online flight tracking websites, that can provide the tools to track one or more flights.

These websites retrieve their information from the Federal Aviation Administration, making all flight details accurate up-to-the-minute. If you need to track a flight to arrange a pickup time or you need information on the timing and current conditions of your own flight, online flight trackers are a one-stop resource.

Go to Flight Explorer (see Resources). On Flight Explorer's website you have a few ways to track a flight.

Enter the flight number. Then press "Track." The next page will give you real time and in-depth details about a flight. This is the flight's tracking page. Information given includes the airline, flight status and the time and distance remaining on the flight. It will also tell you the actual time the plane departed, the estimated arrival time and the departure gate number. Other relevant information includes the flight's on-time history and the current weather for the city. Plus you can see a detailed map of the current flight, with option to view the map in 3D.

Use the flight search feature. This option is for when you don't know or have the flight number. You can access the feature two ways---from the website's homepage by clicking the link under the "Enter Flight ID" text box or by clicking "Flight Lookup" at the top of the web page. Using the flight search feature, enter the information you have. You can search by airline or departure and arrival airline. You can also filter results by date and flight status. Once you enter known flight information and select the flight, you are taken to the flight's tracking page.

Get airport status. Located at the top of the web page, "Airport Status" will give you information about all flights operating in and out of the airport. Enter the airport code and if you don't know it, select the airport name and city from the drop-down menu. On the airport information page, you can check for all flight delays. Additionally, there are three options to check different flight statuses: In-Flight, Arrived and Planned.
