How to Compare Plane Seats

When traveling by air you are often asked what kind of plane seat you want. Although the options are usually aisle or window there are actually many other seating choices available to you. These seating choices may have an impact on how comfortable you are during your flight and possibly when you are allowed off of the plane itself. The next time you choose a plane seat there are many different items to take into consideration.

Look at the class of the ticket. This is the first identification factor of the ticket. Typically there are three different classes: economy (coach), business class and first class. Economy comes at the lowest price but has the smallest chairs, less leg room and the food is not always of the best standard. Business class is an upgrade with slightly larger seats, better food and more leg room, while first class (the most expensive ticket) sits at the front of the plane, has the most leg room and often comes with extra perks such as alcoholic beverages without the charge and an upgraded meal.

Decide where you want the seat to be. On smaller planes there are typically only window and aisle seats. You have the option of either looking out the window or being able to freely get out of your seat to use the restroom. Larger planes have middle seats. These seats set you in between other passengers.

Locate the seat on the plane. Seats toward the front of the plane and past the wings are usually the quietest seats, with first class seats offering the best noise-resistant seats. Seats next to the wings and at the tail end of the plane are the loudest due to their proximity to the engines.

Check to see if the seat is next to an emergency exit. When looking at a plane grid online there are often red lines next to the seat. This means an emergency exit door is on the wall. During the flight, you are asked if you want to switch because in case of an emergency you need to help other passengers.
