How to Get Around San Francisco International Airport

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is located 14 miles south of the city and is the main airport. Plan to arrive early since the city's heavy traffic begins as early as 3:30 p.m. Here are some basics about the airport to help you get around with ease.

      Know about the terminals. Terminals one and three are for domestic flights, and both terminals have two boarding areas with numerous gates. Terminal two is being renovated (as of the fall 2007). The international terminal has two boarding areas as well.

      Familiarize yourself with the locations of important places. Ticket counters and gates are located on the upper level or departure level. Baggage claim is located on the lower level or arrival level. If you're renting a car to get around San Francisco, take the AirTrain to the rental car center that is on the fourth floor.

      Go to different parts of the airport. The AirTrain is an internal transit system that can take you to various locations. AirTrain is located in all terminals and parking garages.

      Arrive on the lower level of each terminal if you're taking a taxi or public transportation. The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) is a subway system that can be accessed from each terminal as well. Shuttles are also available.

      Look for the airport's additional features. The aquarium is in terminal one on the departure level. Galleries that display museum exhibits are located throughout the airport. The kid's area is in terminal three in boarding area F.
