Samoa's transport network is concentrated on the main island of Upolu, with connections to Savai'i and smaller islands.
~400 km (250 mi) of paved and unpaved roads. The main coastal road circles Upolu; secondary roads branch inland and to the south coast.
Colorful, privately operated buses are the backbone of local travel. They connect Apia (the capital) with villages island-wide. No fixed timetable—buses leave when full. Cheap and cultural.
Available in Apia and larger towns. Not metered; agree on fare before departure.
Regular car/passenger ferries cross the Apolima Strait between Upolu and Savai'i (60–90 min). Smaller boats serve Manono and Apolima islands.
Rental cars are popular for visitors; drive on the left (switched from right in 2009).
