How to Paint a New Fiberglass Core Boat

Although most new fiberglass-core boats feature a color-tinted gelcoat exterior, not all of these resin coatings hold up well. Thus, you may wish to paint your boat's hull for a more long-lasting finish. Painting a fiberglass-core boat requires a certain amount of effort and skill, as with any large painting job. But more importantly, it requires urethane paint and paint stripper that work with the material. Failing to use the proper paint can result in a finish that does not last or even damages the hull.

Things You'll Need

  • Fiberglass boat paint
  • Fiberglass boat primer
  • Fiberglass boat sealant
  • Fiberglass paint stripper, as needed
  • Wrenches, as needed
  • Screwdrivers, as needed
  • Tape
  • Paintbrushes or paint sprayer

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any hardware, whether metal, plastic or wood, from the section of the hull you intend to paint, using wrenches, screwdrivers or other tools as necessary.

    • 2

Remove any pre-existing paint with a fiberglass paint stripper if your hull is painted rather than simply gelcoated. You should not have to remove the gelcoat from a new hull, as it will not have picked up the wax and contaminants that an older boat might have. Likewise, you should not face any nicks or scratches requiring repair.

    • 3

Tape off the borders with any sections of the hull you do not want painted, and prime the portion you intend to paint using an appropriate fiberglass boat hull primer.

    • 4

Paint the boat hull using fiberglass boat paint. You likely will need several coats. Follow that by applying fiberglass boat sealant, again applying as many coats as needed.
