How to Wire a 14-Foot Aluminum Boat

Boating at night requires lighting to indicate to other vessels your position and direction of travel. The lights are required by law throughout all waterways in North America. A 14-foot aluminum boat falls under the lighting requirements for boats under 39 feet long. This includes a white light on the rear of the boat and a dual green/red bow light. Wiring these lights requires connecting them to a battery and a switch for control.

Instructions

    • 1

Strip 3/8 inches of insulation off the black wire and connect to the ground wire for the green/red bow light with a butt connector. These work by inserting each wire into the ends of the butt connector and compressing with pliers.

    • 2

Run the black wire along the inside edge of the boat to the battery and cut and strip to length. Connect another section of black wire and connect it to the ground connection on the rear white light and run it to the battery.

    • 3

Loosen the negative terminal on the battery and slide both black wires under the terminal and tighten it down.

    • 4

Strip 3/8 inches of insulation off the end of the red wire and connect it to the positive wire on the green and red bow light with a butt connector. Run this wire to the switch and cut and strip to length. Connect another section of red wire to the rear white light and run it to the switch.

    • 5

Loosen one of the terminals on the switch with a screwdriver. Insert both red wires into this terminal and tighten it down. Strip another section of red wire and connect it to the other terminal on the switch.

    • 6

Run the red wire to the boat's battery and connect it to the positive red terminal of the battery

    • 7

Wrap all of the connections in electrical tape to protect them from the elements. Secure loose wires with cable ties.
