Where is water located in the body?

Water is distributed throughout the body, both inside and outside of cells. About 2/3 of total body water is inside cells (intracellular fluid), while the remaining 1/3 is found outside cells (extracellular fluid).

Extracellular fluid includes:

- Interstitial fluid: fluid that surrounds cells within tissues

- Plasma: fluid component of blood

- Transcellular fluid: small volumes of fluid found in specialized parts of the body like cerebrospinal fluid, digestive tract secretions, pleural, synovial, and intraocular fluids.
