Does the river tees ever flood?

The river tees has a history of flooding. The most recent major flood occurred in 2012 when the river burst its banks and flooded Stockton-on-Tees and other areas in the Tees Valley. The flooding caused millions of pounds worth of damage and displaced hundreds of people from their homes.

Other notable floods occurred in 1934, when the river burst its banks at Yarm and flooded much of the surrounding countryside, and in 2000, when the river flooded parts of Yarm, Stockton-on-Tees and Middlesbrough.

The risk of flooding from the river tees is still a major concern and a number of schemes have been put in place to reduce the risk of future flooding, including building flood banks and improving the river's drainage.
