- Aswan High Dam: This dam is located in southern Egypt and is one of the largest dams in the world. It was completed in 1970 and has a height of 111 meters (364 feet). The dam was built primarily for hydroelectric power generation and flood control, but also provides for irrigation.
- Roseires Dam: This dam is located in Sudan and was completed in 1966. It has a height of 98 meters (322 feet) and was built for hydroelectric power generation and irrigation purposes.
- Merowe Dam: Another dam located in Sudan, Merowe Dam was completed in 2009 and has a height of 69 meters (226 feet). It was built for hydroelectric power generation and irrigation.
- Owen Falls Dam: This dam is located in Uganda and was completed in 1954. It has a height of 105 meters (344 feet) and was built for hydroelectric power generation.
- Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD): This is a dam currently under construction on the Blue Nile River in Ethiopia. Once completed, it is expected to be the largest dam in Africa. It is being built primarily for hydroelectric power generation and is a source of tension and potential conflict between Ethiopia and its downstream neighbors, Sudan and Egypt.
These are just a few of the dams located on the Nile River. The Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) is an intergovernmental partnership of riparian countries that aims to promote cooperative management and development of the Nile River Basin resources.
