What made crossing lake Erie so dangerous?

The shallow and rocky water made Lake Erie prone to huge, unpredictable storms. This led to a high number of shipwrecks, leading the writer James Fenimore Cooper to declare that "no other lakes contain so many dangers to the navigator as this inland sea."
