What to Pack for Two Days at the Beach?

Packing for any trip can be a daunting task, especially when you have to narrow your packing list down to two days for an outdoor venue such as the beach. Balancing essentials from extras can make the difference between packing lightly and effectively or taking too much of a load. The most important items should always be in the bag, such as medicine and identification, and the list begins to narrow down to other items such as suncreen, clothing and entertainment items.
  1. Essentials

    • Two days is a very short time, and whether the trip takes place on a weekend or weekday may have a small impact. One of the most important factors to consider is that the trip is only 48 hours, 16 of which may be spent sleeping. Determine who is coming with you and factor in whether the beach trip is a family mini vacation, a romantic getaway or whether you are flying solo, which will determine the number of bags you will take along. Ideally each person should get a bag the size of a large tote, and, if there is a baby, you'll need two bags and a stroller.

    Must-Haves

    • Don't forget to pack your medication and money, which are the first things to consider when packing. Also pack items such as credit cards, eyeglasses, driver's license, identification, maps and other items you need to have on you in case of an emergency. If you are taking a baby, things that normally go in your baby bag, such as diapers, wipes, formula and water also need to be brought along -- enough for two days. If you have dietary requirements, carry along any travel packs of food items that you cannot purchase.

    Beach Essentials

    • The beach can be a harsh, dehydrating, outdoor environment, so try to pack essentials such as sunscreen, sunglasses, lots of water (or bring cash to buy enough water) and body lotion. Other essentials include anti-itch cream, insect repellent and a small first-aid kit. Don't forget to also pack a travel-size deodorant and body mist/spray/perfume.

    Beach Apparel

    • Depending on your travel arrangement, you may not have a lot of room or time to change frequently, so pack very light, versatile clothing items. A minimal example per day includes one bathing suit, a sarong or beach shorts, a wide-brimmed beach hat and flip-flops. If spending the night on the beach, carry light clothing, such as linen (or any lightweight material) pants and dresses as well as a long-sleeved shirt or jacket. You might also want to pack a pair of sandals.

    Entertainment

    • Since you may have to shuffle around the beach until you find the right location for your mood, you'll need to find that balance between taking enough to keep you and your travel party entertained while not taking too much along. If you are an avid reader, a portable reader such as a Kindle or a good book helps while away. For the more active and athletic, take light goodies such as deflatable beach balls, kites, a Frisbee, and paddle balls. If you have children, pack a light plastic shovel and pail.

    Blankets and Chairs

    • Determine whether you will take public transportation or a car while on the trip. If you can only take a tote bag, take one or two lightweight beach blankets. If you have a car or another convenient mode of transportation, a beach chair and umbrella will provide total comfort. You should also take a regular umbrella in case of rain.
