What are two ways or routes by which water might make its way to the ocean?

1. Surface water. This is water that flows over the land's surface, such as rivers and streams. Surface water can eventually make its way to the ocean either directly or indirectly. Direct discharge occurs when a river or stream empties into the ocean. Indirect discharge occurs when surface water collects in a lake or reservoir and then seeps into the ground and eventually makes its way to the ocean through groundwater flow.

2. Groundwater. This is water that is stored in the ground below the surface. Groundwater can eventually make its way to the ocean through two main processes: springs and seeps. Springs are places where groundwater emerges from the ground and flows onto the surface. Seeps are places where groundwater slowly oozes out of the ground and may not form a visible stream. Both springs and seeps can contribute to the flow of water into the ocean.
