Relief Canals: Flood Management Channels
Relief canals are artificial or modified channels built alongside rivers to divert excess floodwater during high flows, preventing dangerous overtopping of riverbanks downstream. Examples:
- Calder-Aire Flood Channel (West Yorkshire, England) – one of Europe's largest hydraulic relief works (>2 km wide).
- Alverca Relief Channel (44 km, Portugal) with Santo Adrião and Santo Antão reservoirs on the Trancão and Jamor rivers near Lisbon.
These structures are critical for flood risk management.
