Oklahoma Motorboat Requirements: Mufflers, Lights, Sound & Fire Safety

Oklahoma Motorboat Requirements: Mufflers, Lights, Sound & Fire Safety

Oklahoma law (Title 63, Ch. 13) mandates specific equipment on all motorboats operating on state waters. Beyond the basics (registration, life jackets), these four systems are non-negotiable for safety and legality.

1. Mufflers: Silence the Roar

  • Required: Every motorboat must have a factory-installed or equivalent muffler in good working order.
  • Standard: Must "effectively prevent excessive or unusual noise."
  • Prohibited: Cutouts, bypasses, straight pipes, "thru-transom" exhaust without muffler.
  • Enforcement: Officers can test decibels (90 dB(A) at 50 ft typical standard). Violation = misdemeanor.

2. Navigation Lights: Be Seen, Be Safe (Sunset to Sunrise)

Required between sunset and sunrise and during restricted visibility:

  • Power-driven vessels < 12m (39.4 ft): Masthead light (white, 225° forward) + Stern light (white, 135° aft) OR All-round white light (360°) + Sidelights (red port, green starboard, 112.5° each).
  • Power-driven vessels 12–20m: Masthead (225°), Stern (135°), Sidelights (112.5°). Masthead must be 2.5m above gunwale.
  • Sailing vessels: Sidelights + Stern light OR Tri-color masthead (sail only).
  • Anchored: All-round white light (360°) forward.

3. Sound-Producing Device: Make Yourself Heard

  • Required: Whistle, horn, or other device audible ≥ 1/2 mile in calm conditions.
  • Vessels < 12m: Whistle or horn (handheld OK).
  • Vessels 12–20m: Whistle/horn + bell (≥ 200mm diameter).
  • Vessels ≥ 20m: Whistle/horn + bell + gong.
  • Use: Meeting, crossing, overtaking, fog, emergency (5 short blasts = danger/doubt).

4. Fire Extinguishers: Coast Guard Approved

  • Required on boats with: Inboard engine; closed fuel tank compartment; double-bottom hull not sealed; closed living space; permanent fuel tank.
  • Type: USCG-approved Type B (flammable liquid) — 5-B (most common) or 20-B.
  • Quantity by Length:
    • < 26 ft: 1 × 5-B
    • 26–40 ft: 2 × 5-B or 1 × 20-B
    • 40–65 ft: 3 × 5-B or 1 × 5-B + 1 × 20-B
  • Mounting: Readily accessible, not near engine. Inspect gauge monthly; shake dry chemical annually.

Bonus: Life Jackets (PFDs) — The Real Lifesaver

  • One wearable USCG-approved PFD per person (Type I, II, III, or V).
  • Children ≤ 12: Must WEAR PFD underway on vessel < 26 ft.
  • Throwable (Type IV) required on vessels ≥ 16 ft.

Oklahoma patrols (Game Wardens, Highway Patrol Marine Enforcement) check compliance regularly. Violations = fines ($50–$500+), court, possible impoundment. Equip right, boat safe, avoid the ticket.
