Bimini Top Instructions

A Bimini top is made especially for a boat and consists of a canvas material supported by a frame made of metal. Adding a Bimini top to a boat can provide shade and add eye appeal. Installing the top only takes a few hours, and the job does not need specialty tools. Bimini tops are sized by width, length and height so take measurements of the boat before making a purchase.
  1. Putting the Bimini Top Together

    • The backside of the Bimini top can be found by locating the label, as it is on the underside of the canvas fabric. Take the large bow and slide it through the sleeve located on the back of the top. The two holes close to the curve of the upright portion of the bow should be facing toward the front of the Bimini top. Take the medium bow and slide it through the sleeve located at the forward section of the top. The two holes here should face the back of the Bimini top. Slide the last bows through the sleeves that are left. Two of the enclosed straps should be attached to the large bow and two should be attached to the medium bow. Just pass the bows through the loops in the straps. Each strap should be secured with a screw and decorative washer. All bow ends should be inserted into the jaw slide pivot points located on the main bow. Secure the connections with screws, and the top has been assembled.

Attaching a Bimini Top to the Boat

    • Place the fully opened Bimini top on the boat and mark the position of the largest bow with a pencil. Mark a corresponding point across from this mark. The mounting brackets will be installed at these two points. They should be the same distance from the bow or from the stern. Put a mounting bracket down on the mark and outline it using a pencil. Proceed to mark all of the screw holes as well. Use a drill bit that is smaller than the actual screws and drill the needed holes for the brackets. Secure the brackets to the boat. The main bow should now be attached to the brackets. Place the forward strap eyes on the boat and drill holes to attach them to the boat. The forward strap eyes need to be mounted so that they will place the straps at a minimum of a 45-degree angle. The back eyes for the rear straps need to be set once the forward strap eyes are completed. The straps need to be adjusted until the top is positioned horizontally.
