The Red River of the South flows southeast for ~1,360 miles (2,190 km) from its headwaters in the Texas Panhandle (near Amarillo) across the Texas–Oklahoma border, through Arkansas, and into Louisiana.
It empties into the Atchafalaya River (a major distributary of the Mississippi) near Simmesport, LA, ultimately reaching the Gulf of Mexico via Atchafalaya Bay. The river drains ~94,000 sq mi across five states: Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, and a small slice of New Mexico.
Not to be confused with the Red River of the North (flows north into Lake Winnipeg, Canada).
