Ohio Driver's Test: Parallel Parking Space Dimensions (20 ft × 8 ft)

Ohio BMV requires the parallel parking space to be at least 20 feet long × 8 feet wide.

Test Procedure

  1. Pull alongside front vehicle (2–3 ft gap).
  2. Reverse into space: signal, check mirrors/blind spots.
  3. Straighten wheels; center in space.
  4. Final position: ≤12 inches from curb, centered between vehicles.

Scoring (Deductions)

  • Hit curb: -5 to -10 (minor vs. major)
  • Straddle line / not centered: -5
  • >12" from curb: -5
  • Excessive pull-ups: -5 each
  • Fail to signal/check: -5 each
  • Collision / dangerous action: Automatic fail

Practice Setup

  • Cones or parked cars at 20' × 8'.
  • Practice with same vehicle you'll test in (turning radius varies).
  • Reference points: side mirror alignment, rear window corner.

Pro Tip

Ohio allows backup cameras but not self-parking systems. You must demonstrate manual control.
