Are Subarus Made in Colorado? No—Here's Where They're Built

Subaru Manufacturing Footprint

Subaru vehicles are not manufactured in Colorado. The brand's production is concentrated in three countries:

1. Japan (Primary Hub)

  • Gunma Prefecture (Subaru-chō): Main plant complex (Yajima, Oizumi, Otakita). Produces: Impreza, WRX, Levorg, Forester, Outback, Legacy, BRZ, Ascent (for Japan/export).
  • History: All Subarus were Japan-built until 1989.

2. United States – Lafayette, Indiana (Subaru of Indiana Automotive, SIA)

  • Since 1989: Only Subaru plant in the US.
  • Models: Ascent, Outback, Legacy, Impreza (sedan/hatch).
  • Capacity: ~390,000 units/year.
  • Also builds: Toyota Camry (contract manufacturing).
  • Zero-landfill facility since 2004.

3. Thailand – Gateway Plant (Bangkok)

  • Since 2012: Serves ASEAN, Australia, some other RHD markets.
  • Models: XV (Crosstrek), Forester, Outback.

Why Not Colorado?

Colorado has no major auto assembly plants. Subaru's US base is Indiana (logistics, rail, supplier network, workforce). Colorado is a top sales market for Subaru (AWD popularity), and hosts the Subaru of America HQ in Camden, NJ (not CO).

How to Know Where Yours Was Built

Check the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) first character:

  • J = Japan
  • 1, 4, 5 = USA (SIA = 4S3, 4S4...)
  • M = Thailand
