Holland America Line, originally called the Dutch-America Steamship Co., was founded to meet the demand of passengers traveling back and forth from Rotterdam, Netherlands, to the United States. They were also one of the first lines to offer passage to the Dutch West Indies in the late 19th century, via the newly opened Suez Canal.
Today, Holland America Line operates 14 cruise ships, all in the mid-size range. The newest addition, the 2,100-passenger "ms Eurodam," entered service in July 2008.
Holland America ships sail throughout the globe and have a strong presence in the Caribbean, Alaska, Europe and Mexico. The line is also known for its extensive round-the-world cruise.
Holland America ships are smaller than some of their glitzier competitors, such as Royal Caribbean and Princess ships. The line caters to an older, more well-traveled clientele and all ships offer gracious Indonesian and Filipino service staff. All ships include a smattering of Dutch and Indonesian art and decorative pieces, and the ships offer a showroom with live entertainment, multiple dining options, pools, a casino and a variety of activities.
Those looking for nonstop action and all of the trendiest activities (such as a rock-climbing wall and on-board skating rink) are well advised to choose another line.
Holland America cruises can be booked via the line's Web site (see link below) or through one of thousands of travel agents in the U.S. and Canada. To find a Holland America agent near you, follow the link on the website.
