- Be at least 18 years old
- Have a high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
- Have a valid New York State driver's license
- Have a clean driving record
- Be able to pass a physical examination
- Be able to speak and understand English fluently
- Be able to work independently and as part of a team
- Have good decision-making skills
- Be able to work in all weather conditions
To apply for a position as a Suffolk County Crossing Guard, you must complete an application form and submit it to the Suffolk County Department of Public Works. The application form is available online at the Suffolk County website.
Once you have submitted your application, you will be contacted by the Department of Public Works to schedule an interview. If you are selected for the position, you will be required to complete a training program before you can begin working.
The training program for Suffolk County Crossing Guards covers a variety of topics, including:
- Traffic safety
- First aid
- CPR
- Pedestrian safety
- Conflict resolution
- Communication skills
Once you have completed the training program, you will be assigned to a crossing guard post. You will be responsible for crossing students and other pedestrians safely across the street. You will also be responsible for enforcing traffic laws and regulations in your assigned area.
