The Wabash and Erie Canal was a canal in the U.S. state of Indiana that connected the Wabash River to Lake Erie. It was built between 1833 and 1843 and operated until 1874. During its operation, the canal increased the population and commerce in the state of Indiana by providing a direct water route between the Great Lakes and the Ohio River.
