Who is the first European to sail Mississippi?

The first European to sail down the Mississippi River was the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto. In 1541, de Soto led an expedition from Florida to the Mississippi River. He and his men traveled down the river for several months, exploring and mapping the area. De Soto died of fever in 1542, and his expedition was eventually abandoned.
