How to Ride Public Transportation

Public transportation often represents the easiest way to get around most major cities in the world. Although the particulars may differ depending on the location and the type of public transportation, many of the things you need to know about riding public transportation won't change from one locale to another.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate information about the public transportation system that you want to ride. You'll want to know where the nearest stop is and what times the transportation system runs through that stop.

    • 2

Get a map to determine where you can go and where any relevant stops are located. Many transportation systems have maps at each station and some have smaller, pocket maps that you can take with you as well. Before leaving for a location, search the Internet to see if you can print out a public transportation map for each city you visit, or have the public transportation department for that locale send you a map. On most maps, a specific line of transportation will be represented by a specific color, so it should be easy to follow.

    • 3

Purchase a ride on the public transportation system. In some locations, you may need to buy a ticket or you may need to put money onto a special card, which gives you access to the public transportation system. Check with the public transportation system that you want to ride for the specific requirements about tickets or fares. Ask for special deals that give you multiple rides at a lower cost.

    • 4

Pick an appropriate stop or station for your destination. Many systems use color-coded routes and you must figure out which stop will be closest to your destination. Keep in mind that you may need to change buses or trains to get to where you want to go.

    • 5

Make sure that you're headed in the right direction. Many public transportation systems run back and forth along a line. In many cases, you'll have to know the station or stop at the end of the route in the direction you want to go.

    • 6

Listen for your stop to be called. Most public transportation systems will identify the stops coming up several times and there may also be maps posted inside the vehicle. If you miss your stop, get off at the next one and work your way back or wait until you reach a transfer station and head back in the direction you came.
