How to Travel Using Light Rail

As of April 2011, light rail systems are in operation across the United States. San Jose, Calif., and Buffalo, N.Y., are just two of the country's urban areas to include this type of mass transit in their infrastructure. The list also includes Charlotte, N.C., Denver, Dallas, Newark, N.J., and San Diego. More systems are under construction or in the planning stages, so as the 21st century progresses, more and more citizens are going to include light rail in their regular transportation usage. A number of features are common to most light rail systems, such as journey planning and automatic ticket purchase.

Instructions

  1. Planning Your Journey

    • 1

Identify the nearest light rail station to your starting point on a map of the system. Then identify the light rail station closest to your destination.

    • 2

Note any changes you have to make. If you can access your light rail system's website, use the journey planner to identify the simplest way of making the journey. Key in your starting point and your destination. The planner will tell you the quickest way to travel between the two stations, including where to make any changes.

    • 3

Check your light rail timetable. Services may be frequent during the day, but if you're traveling in the late evening or very early morning, there may be a longer period between trains. It's best not to have to wait too long at the station.

    Making Your Journey

    • 4

Ensure you arrive at the light rail station in good time, especially if traveling during a period of reduced frequency when there are larger gaps between trains.

    • 5

Purchase your ticket from the ticket vending machine, and make your way onto the platform. Check signage to ensure you're on the right platform for the direction in which you want to travel.

    • 6

Remain clear of the train doors when it arrives to allow people to disembark. Then get into one of the cars and sit down. At peak times you may have to stand.

    • 7

Relax during the journey. Listen to music or read, but get ready to leave the train when the next station is your stop.

    • 8

Make your way to the door as the train slows, so you are ready to get off immediately when the doors open. Follow the signs for the exit or, if transferring to another line, the signs for the relevant platform.
