Older catalytic heaters lack the safety features of new ones. These features include low oxygen cut-off sensors, safety guards and tip over alarms. In smaller RVs, these safety features could save your life.
All catalytic heaters use oxygen as part of the combustion process. Many are vent-free, which means they do not require venting to the outdoors. Vent-free catalytic heaters require that a window or roof vent be opened to replace the oxygen that is used during combustion.
Catalytic heaters do not have an open flame. They should be kept away from combustible materials, such as blankets, draperies or blind cords. These items can burn if they come in contact with the heating element. RV fires are extremely dangerous as the space is small and they can burn quickly.
