North Carolina General Statute § 20-138.1 makes it unlawful for any person riding in a pickup to occupy such position in the body of a pickup truck on any public traveled place when there exists any seat in the passenger's compartment designed as seating accommodation. There are exceptions including children under 16 traveling at slow rates of speed on dirt roads for very short distances.
