RV Propane Tank Problems

Propane is a highly explosive gas, but if handled properly it is extremely safe. Propane is odor-free, so ethyl mercaptan is added to give it a rotten egg or garlicky smell. It weights 4.2 lbs. per 1 gallon of liquid and is purchased in a liquid state. For every 10 degrees Fahrenheit in temperature increase, propane expands 1.5 percent. When it is vaporized, it expands 270 to 1. Liquid propane can even boil at -44 degrees Fahrenheit. Over time propane tanks can become damaged from mother nature or excessive travel.
  1. Cylinder

    • Propane cylinders come in a variety of sizes from small disposable tanks to large reusable ones. If you want to refinish a propane cylinder it should be painted white or off-white. The reason: If it is painted a dark color, it will absorb heat and cause the propane to expand 1.5 percent for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit increased.

    Hoses

    • Propane goes in to the regulator via hoses. These hoses should indicate that they are good for up to 350 lbs of liquid propane (LP) gas. They can crack and dry crack from age. Don't use plumber's tape or other lubricants on the threads. It can cause an improper seal and cause leaks.

    Leaks

    • There are a couple of ways to check for a propane leak. This should never be done with an open flame. Either use an electronic leak detector or a liquid leak detector. Soap and water should never be used to look for a leak either; they can damage the fillings. If the brass fitting is turning green, water and soap has been used on it. This can cause a leak.

    Purging

    • Lack of purging is a very common problem. Purging removes atmospheric pressure from the container. New tanks must also be purged. When you do not purge the system, it can cause inefficiency and safety issues.

    Tests

    • Propane needs to be treated carefully, but don't be terrified of it. Find a certified technician and get a leak test done at least once a year inside your RV. The overall process should take a half-hour.
