Tips on Repairing a Travel Trailer Commode

The commode in a travel trailer may require repairs once in a while. The most common problems are the seat and commode coming loose. Other issues include broken foot pedals and flushing mechanisms. All of these issues are easy to remedy. Completing the repairs is well within the skill level of most travel trailer owners.
  1. The Seat

    • The seat of the travel trailer commode is designed to stay in place. They are designed not to shift while in travel. As time goes on, the seat may become loose from road vibrations and regular use. To remedy a loose seat, locate the bolts that hold it in place and tighten them so that the seat no longer shifts.

    The Commode

    • Sometimes the entire travel trailer commode will become loose. There is a plate on the floor that the commode bolts into. Check to see that none of the bolts are missing. Replace any missing, stripped or broken bolts. Tighten all loose connections.

    Hardware

    • The foot pedal that flushes the unit may break in older travel trailers. A broken foot pedal has to be replaced. Check your travel trailer's paperwork or owner's manual to determine the brand of your travel trailer's commode. RV dealers carry replacement parts for most of the popular brands. If brand-name parts are not available, use universal or generic parts instead.

    Seals

    • A seal is in between the travel trailer commode and the black water tank. Leaking waste from the travel trailer commode will be your clue that this is the problem. Depending on the age of your travel trailer and the brand of commode that you have, the unit may have to be removed completely to replace the seal. This repair is best performed when the black water tank is empty.

    Fresh Water Supply

    • Fresh water

The least common type of repair to the travel trailer commode is to the fresh water supply. The water line could develop a leak or the fresh water outlet could become blocked. Any leak should be taken care of immediately. It may be as simple as tightening a connection or replacing part of the water line. A blocked water outlet requires cleaning.
