With only a tight amount of space to store luggage, household items, toys and toiletries, knowing how to make the most out of your storage space is an important part of efficient trailer travel. Some creative solutions can ensure you have ample space for your belongings, however. Store bulky items like suitcases and coats and boots under beds, tables and chairs. Hang over-the-door bags with pockets and compartments on doors throughout the trailer, and use organizers like shoe holders to hold smaller items other than shoes, such as umbrellas, toys and automotive equipment.
Some trailers have only the most basic of living quarters, like one main room, a bed area and a bathroom. You can use each space you have for several functions, though, increasing their space value. A living room can be an entertainment center where you play board games on the table. It can also be a study and library area for reading, as well as a dining room. If you have a large open area in your trailer, consider buying a folding coffee table. Some camping stores sell specially designed coffee tables that fold into a flat board and can be stored under beds or a sofa. Throw couch cushions on the floor around the coffee table and let your family sit Japanese-style for dining.
Getting your trailer ready for travel is only half the process. For long trailer travel, it's important to make sure you take time for the maintenance required for road tripping great distances. A kit on board the trailer including oil for oil changes, jumper cables, a spare tire and flares in case you break down is a good safety option. Also, plan out in your itinerary stops along your route at auto shops or gas station to check the air in your tires and make sure your battery is running well.
