What Rubberized Material Is Used on RV Roofs?

The most commonly used material for RVs to use as a rubber roof is Ethylene Propylene Dien Monomer (EPDM).
  1. Manufacturer

    • Dicor is one of the many companies that produce the product. It is sold to RV manufacturers who then sell it to their customers.

    Customers

    • Dealers do not apply this coating to roofs. It is up to the RV owner to add it. The material can last up to 30 years, according to EPDMcoatings.com.

    Petroleum-based Solutions

    • If you use petroleum-based solvents, harsh abrasives or any cleaners made with citrus they can penetrate the membrane and dissolve the adhesive resulting in a bubbly roof.

    Weather

    • The material is pliable and will stretch slightly with the temperature and weather. EPDM is used because it can handle all degrees of weather from a low of minus 62 degrees Fahrenheit to a high of 300 degrees.

    Polymer

    • EPDM is considered a new form of rubber polymer. It is used to make hoses, tires and roofing membranes.
