What Are the Badlands Used For?

The Badlands region is one of South Dakota's most sought-out tourist attractions. Badlands National Park is abundant in wildlife and must-see natural beauty.

  1. Education

    • The Badlands are used to educate people on the wildlife and history of the region. When visiting the park, you can participate in a number of classes taught by rangers.

    Trails

    • The Badlands have three major trails that wind through the region. The Cliff Shelf Nature Trail, Notch Trail and Cliff Shelf Nature Trail allow visitors to get up close to nature.

    Wilderness

    • Bison, prairie dogs and other animals are abundant in the Badlands. The unpaved Sage Creek Rim road allow visitors to drive their cars along the Badlands to see the wildlife.

    History

    • In the past, the Badlands were used for military practice. During World War II, the government used 341,726 acres on the Pine Ridge Reservation as a gunnery range.

    American Indians

    • American Indians once used the Badlands as hunting grounds. The Three Affiliated Tribes still call parts of the region home.
