What Kind of Roof Coating Can I Use on RV Rubber Roofs?

RVs have aluminum, fiberglass or rubber roofs. When coating a rubber roof there are specific rubber-friendly solutions that will not harm the roof.
  1. EDPM

    • Dicor Corporation makes the product EDPM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) which is commonly used on rubber roofs.

    Installation

    • The product must be applied by the manufacturer or RV owner and should last 30 years if it is installed properly.

    Petroleum-based

    • It is crucial that no petroleum-based solvents, harsh abrasives or citric based cleaners are used on rubber roofs.

    Problems

    • Using petroleum-based solvents on a rubber roof can do severe damage by penetrating the membrane and dissolving the adhesive holding it down. It can result in bubbles or large, loose patches.

    Maintenance

    • Rubber roofs require care and are not cheap. However, if properly installed and maintained they are almost leak proof.
