How to Install an RV Rubber Roof

As your RV roof ages, it will deteriorate or develop leaks and it will have to be replaced. It can be a do-it-yourself project, but it is quite challenging. A major advantage to doing it yourself is you only have to pay for supplies, not labor as well.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Wrench
  • Rubber roof
  • Utility knife
  • Rubber membrane
  • Wood putty
  • Sandpaper
  • Water-based adhesive (glue)
  • Plastic squeegee
  • Screws (assorted sizes)

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any trim and fasteners with a screwdriver. Then remove anything mounted to the roof with a wrench or screwdriver. Mark each piece so you can replace it in the correct place when reinstalling them.

    • 2

Cut the rubber roofing with a utility knife, but be careful to not cut too deeply. Cut the rubber into 8- and 10-inch pieces.

    • 3

Pull up one strip at a time, leaving as much of the wood decking in place as possible. Some will stick to the rubber; this is normal.

    • 4

Lay out the new rubber membrane. Look for any defects on the rubber.

    • 5

Fill any holes in the wood decking with wood putty. Let it dry overnight.

    • 6

Sand and smooth the wood deck once it is dry. Be sure to clean the sanding dust off the roof.

    • 7

Unroll the rubber membrane on the roof, positioning it to make sure it hangs evenly side to side as well as end to end. Roll it back up halfway and apply the glue as you unroll it. Place the rubber membrane back down and do the same to the other half as well.

    • 8

Use your hands to do the first smoothing process. Follow up with a plastic squeegee to work out any remaining air bubbles. Allow glue to dry overnight.

    • 9

Remove any putty from the trim, fixtures or other accessories that need to be put back on the roof. You must have a clean surface for the new putty to stick to.

    • 10

Put new putty to the bottom of each surface that needs to be sealed. Install in original sites. Before installing with new screws, stretch the fabric under the trim to avoid wrinkles.

    • 11

Trim any excess that goes past the trim.

    • 12

Locate each vent hole and cut an "x" in them. Pull these flaps down tightly and staple to the wood frame lining.

    • 13

Hook up any wiring for rain sensors, fans or lights. Put putty on the flanges and reinstall. Allow to dry overnight.
