How to Install a Roof Air Conditioner in an RV

New RV units often come with roof top air conditioners to cool off the entire RV. Older units may have them, but often times they are an addition the owner must make. If you are a fairly handy do-it-yourselfer you will be able to install a roof air conditioner in your RV. These air conditioning units run by the same principles as a house window unit.

Things You'll Need

  • Drill and bits (varies from model to model)
  • Saw and blade
  • Assorted wrenches
  • Screwdrivers
  • Silicone based sealant

Instructions

    • 1

Climb the ladder to the roof of the RV. Make a square on the roof big enough to fit the connections between the ceiling portion of the unit and the roof portion of the air conditioner. Make sure the spot is free of interior obstructions.

    • 2

Double check the measurements of the air conditioning unit. Mark the locations of the mounting bolts. Drill the holes in the corners of the square.

    • 3

Saw a hole in the roof where the air conditioner will go. Install the roof portion over the hole. Secure the unit with the mounting bolts.

    • 4

Return inside the RV and install the bolts that hold the ceiling portion in place. Mount the ceiling unit and secure it to the roof unit.

    • 5

Apply sealant where the air conditioner meets the roof. Connect all the wires and plug the ceiling unit into the roof unit.
