How to Open Air Conditioner Dampers

Air conditioners cool standing air and push it out through the cooling unit to provide climate control in enclosed rooms and spaces. To help regulate the flow of the air many units have a single or series of dampers. Dampers open or close to allow more or less cool air to flow out from the vents on the device. Hand dampers or motorized dampers may be on your unit. Open the damper with a few quick tips.

Instructions

Manual Dampers

  Go to the portion of the air conditioner unit where the duct tubes connect to the main rectangular shaped duct. Find the series of small 1/4 inch threaded rods and nuts.

  Insert the screwdriver onto the head of the rod and turn counter-clockwise to open the dampers.

  Turn until the damper vent slots are parallel to the vent windows. The dampers are now fully open.
Motorized Dampers

  Go to the thermostat control panel on the air conditioner.

  Push the damper control button and watch the vent panels open.
- 6
  Release the switch when the damper vents are parallel to the air conditioner bottom. The dampers are now fully opened.
