Go through the preflight procedures with the aircraft; checking the fuel, fuel quality, oil and all mechanisms on the craft. Begin the taxi to the takeoff area. Bring the aircraft off the runway, giving the Piper Cub the appropriate thrust to overcome the ground effect.
Climb until you reach your desired or prescribed altitude for your flight. Level the aircraft and adjust the trim with the trim wheel, found to the right-hand side of the control stick, under the steam gauge panel.
Push the throttle forward. The throttle on the Piper Cub is found on the left-hand side door, and usually it is a red knob. Do not increase the airspeed past 148 km/h (80 kts). Determine your safe airspeed using the wind speed and direction. For example, the Piper Cub's maximum airspeed is 148km/h, if there is a tail wind, check your steam gauges -- the six instrument panels -- on the aircraft dash to check the effect the wind has on the Piper Cub's speed. Adjust the throttle accordingly to increase speed.
Push the nose down to increase speed without increasing the throttle. Gravity is used to gain speed when needed during flights. Take care to not push the aircraft past the maximum speed of 148 km/h, or 80 kts.
