The first German Autobahn was constructed in Berlin between 1913 and 1921. About half of the Autobahn still has no maximum speed limit.
In 2008, Germany's smallest state, Bremen, enacted a maximum speed limit law of 120 km per hour (about 75 miles per hour) which is enforceable on the last six kilometers of German Autobahn's total 60 kilometers.
According to Bremen's top environmental advocate and Green Party politician, Reinhard Loske, the new speed limit law was enacted for several reasons; to reduce noise, increase fuel efficiency, make driving on the Autobahn safer and in order to reduce the adverse environmental effects caused by increased auto emissions at higher driving speeds.
